The Financial Breakaway Podcast is your guide to breaking free from the confusion of the financial world and unlocking your path to a more confident retirement plan. Join me as I look to empower mid-career to retirement-aged individuals, just like you, through engaging conversations about what retirement means to you and then how to build a retirement plan that fits. While crucial topics like investing strategies, tax planning, withdrawal strategies, and social security will be discussed, I believe that your personal goals, desires, and lifestyle are equally vital. In this podcast, I’ll help you bridge the gap between financial strategies and your individual aspirations, merging the two to create your very own ”financial breakaway.” ----------1200 N. The Dow 30 Index Needs To Go
Thursday Oct 28, 2021
Thursday Oct 28, 2021
This episode will be a continuation from my previous episode on the S&P 500 Index. Here I’m going to talk about the Dow 30 Index and how I also see a lot of misunderstanding about this index or just plain wrong understanding of it. I'll talk about how it actually works and throw in a little history about it as well. Then I really get into how the Dow 30 has become the headline of most news outlets as the barometer of the market, and I'll argue that there's a huge disconnect between this and the everyday investor...and that you should really not even give two licks about the Dow 30 when it comes to your personal investing.

Your SP 500 Index Fund Is NOT Diversified
Wednesday Sep 08, 2021
Wednesday Sep 08, 2021
I am quite passionate about this topic as it starts to get to the root of my overall investment philosophy. When you go about building an investment portfolio there are basically two conflicting concepts of how to do that “indexing vs active management” and I'm here to say that S&P 500 index funds are NOT diversified like most people think because of how the index is actually calculated. In this episode we'll talk how that is, what a market capitalization weighted index really means, and how to use that knowledge in your own investing.

The Rule of 72 and Other Investment Rules You Should Know
Thursday Jul 15, 2021
Thursday Jul 15, 2021
In this episode I want to take a step back to the basics of investing and remember why we invest. A lot of times I see people get hung up on trying to figure out the best stock, the best ETF, the best mutual fund or the best investment strategy...you name it...which are all important but I see people fail to really grasp what you actually are doing when you invest and why you do it? And the answer to that is, you are really trying to take advantage of compound interest, yes, the magical world of compound interest.
I think reviewing the Rule of 72, and some other important investment rules of thumb you should know will help you see the power of compound interest and at the same time help you sound smarter in investment conversations after knowing these rules.
Rule of 72: Time for investment to double = 72 / %age Rate of Return
Rule of 114: Time for investment to triple = 114/ %age Rate of Return
Rule of 144: Time for investment to double = 144 / %age Rate of Return
Rule of 1.5: For a stream of investments (we’ll assume annual investments) where the number of years times the interest equals 72 the ending value will equal approximately 1.5 times the amount invested.

The MEGA Backdoor Roth - What You Need to Know
Thursday May 06, 2021
Thursday May 06, 2021
The Mega Backdoor Roth is a special type of 401(k) saving strategy used by people with higher incomes to get nearly triple the amount of funds into their 401(k), while converting a good portion of them to Roth right away. This little-known strategy works under very particular circumstances for people with plenty of extra money they would like to stash in Roth.
Show Notes:
Jane is 45 years old, makes 150,000 a year in income.
Single filer for taxes which puts her over the Roth IRA contribution limit
Company 401(k) match of 50% of first 10% contribution
She does:
$19,500 salary deferral pretax into her 401k
$7,500 company match
$27,000 total contributions
She could then contribute up to $31,000 (58,000 -27,000) into the after-tax source of the 401(k) before hitting the overall cap.
Then she can convert those after-tax dollars to the Roth inside her 401(k) or outside to a Roth IRA if plan allows without penalty.

Backdoor Roth IRA - Is It Right For You?
Sunday Apr 18, 2021
Sunday Apr 18, 2021
It’s no secret that the Roth IRA is my favorite account for retirement planning. The ability to have tax-free growth over a long period of time coupled with tax free withdrawals in retirement is a thing of beauty. Not to mention the other numerous benefit’s it has. However, for all those benefits of the Roth IRA there is a catch, if you make too much money the IRS says you cannot contribute to one. That is unless you know how to get in through the backdoor.
A backdoor Roth IRA allows you to contribute to a Roth IRA even if your income exceeds the IRS-approved amount for such contributions.
In this episode, I'll talk about what this concept is and if it might be right for you.

Should I Sell My Winners? 3 Rules of Thumb
Tuesday Feb 23, 2021
Tuesday Feb 23, 2021
The big question this year in 2021, is "should I sell my winners? " 2020 was a crazy year in the markets and some stocks saw some out of this world gains. Some are up double, triple, or even more than that. Therefore, if you have some of these winners I don’t have to tell you that thoughts start to creep into your mind like, "can it keep going up?" "Is it going to go down now?" "Should I hold?" Should I Sell?" Etc, etc. Unfortunately, the answer to “should you sell” is a “it depends” … I know it’s not a satisfying answer, but in this episode I want to share my own personal 3 rules of thumbs to selling winners to hopefully help you answer this question.

Game Stop and the Mechanics of a Short Squeeze
Tuesday Feb 02, 2021
Tuesday Feb 02, 2021
This episode was recorded after one of the most bizarre weeks in the investment world I have ever seen. Unless you were living under a rock, We all just witnessed the meteoric rise of Game Stop stock and a few others such as AMC, Black Berry, Nokia, and even a local company in Milwaukee here where I live, named Koss Corp…This rise was different in that a reddit page called WallStreetBets was the online community where individual investors combined their buying power together, like we’ve never seen before, into Game Stop stock with the goal to increase its stock price, and in turn sticking-it to the big hedge funds with short positions…creating what might be one of the biggest “short squeeze’s” the market has ever see.. Wow what a ride it was…I was on the edge of my seat all week, literally….so let’s break it down a little bit.

What is a Financial Breakaway
Friday Jan 08, 2021
Friday Jan 08, 2021
In this episode I give you some more info about Financial Breakaway and what that really means to me. In my process of helping clients I spend extra time with them so they can reach their “breakaway moment.” In ice hockey there is a moment in which a player with the puck has no defending players, except for the goaltender, between themselves and the opposing goal, leaving them free to skate in and shoot at will. This is the highest percentage chance of scoring a goal in the game.
And that’s the feeling I want my clients to have in their financial life…free from the confusion of the financial world, a clear path to their goals, and the tools necessary to achieve them. Their own “Financial Breakaway.”
