The Financial Breakaway Podcast is your guide to breaking free from the confusion of the financial world and unlocking your path to a more confident retirement plan. Join me as I look to empower mid-career to retirement-aged individuals, just like you, through engaging conversations about what retirement means to you and then how to build a retirement plan that fits. While crucial topics like investing strategies, tax planning, withdrawal strategies, and social security will be discussed, I believe that your personal goals, desires, and lifestyle are equally vital. In this podcast, I’ll help you bridge the gap between financial strategies and your individual aspirations, merging the two to create your very own ”financial breakaway.” ----------1200 N. 3 Lessons Learned in 2022 So Far | Investing
Friday Sep 30, 2022
Friday Sep 30, 2022
2022 has been a tough year all around for people. Headwinds such as the lingering effects of COVID-19, rising interest rates, rising inflation, rising commodity prices, the Russia/Ukraine War, falling stock and bond market, and then an economy that seems to be having a hangover in general. It has been a lot.
With all this going on, it has been hard to conceptualize how it all works together and how it affects you financially (you as an everyday person). In this episode, I'm breaking down three observations I've seen in the investment markets and following that up with what we can learn from those observations. I try to explore these observations and lessons learned through a greater financial planning lens for the everyday person.
01:00 - Intro
02:55 - Observation 1: Equity markets have had their worst start in 50 years
03:40 - What can we learn: Let’s let history be our guide (look at the SP500 from 1942-until today…80 years)
05:12 - Observation 2: The Bond market has been crushed & this is actually a bigger deal
07:33 - What can we learn: Definitely should’ve been looking at your bond holdings but if you haven’t, there’s still time
08:30 - Observation 3: Volatility
09:12 - What can we learn: In the last 20-plus years, 21 of the 25 worst trading days were followed within a month by one of the best 25 trading days

Investing in the New Normal Series -- COVID-related shutdowns distorted the economy vs where it was before COVID and we are still trying to adapt to this world. The question now is; how do we, as investors trying to save for our future, navigate and invest in it? Let's learn from real people living and working in this "new normal" to help provide a unique perspective on what's going on.
Early on in the COVID crisis gyms and fitness facilities were closing at higher rates than almost any other industry, including bars and restaurants. Thus came the boom of the at-home fitness industry, which some were saying would be the end of future in-person gyms. Fast forward two years, in-person gyms have re-opened, but at what rate? How have they changed? How is the industry accommodating for both at-home and in-person; and is it a zero-sum game?
Mike Wojciechowski & Jamie Eischen, owners of Brew Fitness Shorewood come on the episode and help answer those questions. Mike and Jamie share their inspiring story of going out on their own and opening an in-person gym in the midst of a pandemic, and in the face of naysayers. Their gym aims to focus on community as much as they do fitness offering structured strength classes that include power lifting, high-intensity interval training, strength circuits, and yoga. Full of valuable information. Enjoy!

People are spending more time listening to podcasts, more and more podcasts are being produced, and because of this; more and more money is being spent on podcasts. Therefore, podcasts are a big business. Did COVID have anything to do with this growth? How are podcasts affecting the marketing industry? Marketing creates sales, and sales fuel the economy; are podcasts helping in this new world we find ourselves in?
Richie Burke is an expert in marketing and podcasts so in this episode, he helps answer these questions. Richie hosts a top podcast, the GoGedders Podcast, which has had hundreds of thousands of downloads in only a few short years. He also runs a successful marketing agency, GoGeddit Marketing and Media, which does podcast production, digital advertising, marketing automation, web design, and brand strategy. Let's learn from real people living and working in this "new normal" to help provide a unique perspective on what's going on.
The Great Resignation is a term coined in the new normal world referring to the phenomenon of a large volume of professionals leaving their jobs across the globe. They left for many different reasons: better opportunities, retiring early, not putting up with work conditions accepted pre-pandemic, and many have opted to go into business for themselves.
Greg Copeland did just that. He left a six-figure cooperate job to buy a private, for-profit, hockey rink. Here his great story on why and how he did this. Enjoy!

In this special Thematic Investing Series episode, we go beyond buzzwords in the media with my guests, Mark Schwartz and Nick Cucci. Mark advises early-stage startups and co-founded PDT, a Chicago-based product development firm. Nick leads business development at PDT and helps clients identify new opportunities for innovation.
Mark and Nick were perfect guests to follow up my Thematic Investing Series, diving deeper into common buzzwords like “innovation” or “disruption” and the confusion I see around them lately. Each day, Mark and Nick help companies navigate the complex process from concept to commercialization. They give us a look under the hood of innovation, help us understand what these buzzwords mean, and how innovation actually happens. Mark and Nick will talk about R&D and why it’s important for businesses to spend money or risk falling behind competitors. We also discuss emerging technologies such as LiFi, an alternative to WiFi, to securely transmit data at ultra-fast speeds using the light spectrum. Enjoy!

Thematic Investing Series -- FINALE!
SPECIAL GUESTS my Dad, Mike Hitchcock, & brother, Brett Hitchcock! Mike is President of Montana Broom & Brush Co, and Brett is the Regional Sales Manager for Jon-Don.
One might not normally lump the JanSan industry into today’s view of “thematic investing” as it’s usually not first to mind when buzzwords like “innovation” or “disruption” come up. However, that's exactly why I wanted to do this episode because the professional cleaning industry supplies all sectors of the economy and my Dad and brother have a wealth of knowledge in this industry.
In this episode, they share their experiences being in this industry at the peak of the pandemic, as their industry became heavily relied upon at that time. They then discuss how those experiences have reshaped the JanSan industry today and where they see it going in the future because of it. We also touched on the toilet paper shortage of 2020, the move to “green,” the Amazon effect, and even some cool innovation going on in the industry, just to name a few.
