The Great Resignation is a term coined in the new normal world referring to the phenomenon of a large volume of professionals leaving their jobs across the globe. They left for many different reasons: better opportunities, retiring early, not putting up with work conditions accepted pre-pandemic, and many have opted to go into business for themselves.

One might not normally lump the JanSan industry into today’s view of “thematic investing” as it’s usually not first to mind when buzzwords like “innovation” or “disruption” come up. However, that's exactly why I wanted to do this episode because the professional cleaning industry supplies all sectors of the economy and my Dad and brother have a wealth of knowledge in this industry.
In this episode, they share their experiences being in this industry at the peak of the pandemic, as their industry became heavily relied upon at that time. They then discuss how those experiences have reshaped the JanSan industry today and where they see it going in the future because of it. We also touched on the toilet paper shortage of 2020, the move to “green,” the Amazon effect, and even some cool innovation going on in the industry, just to name a few.

In this episode, Roy helps us understand the current state of the Automation & Robotics industry by sharing how he used those concepts to his advantage to upend the traditional process of machining parts. Getting parts quoted for manufacturing used to take weeks alone, but now is instantaneous at PartsBadger all thanks to automation.
The efficiency of robotics in the manufacturing industry is not new, but Roy discusses how the introduction of automation and robotics together is changing the machining industry from not only efficient but responsive as well. We discussed the characteristics of the expanding end-user of CBD products, the big role government plays, some of the disconnects of the CBD vs. Cannabis industry as a whole, and how that plays out in the public equity markets.
We also had to touch on his impressive $20.6 Million sale for 80% of the business to High Tide Inc., and what that means for him and the company moving forward. High Tide Inc., is a Canadian based company that holds a portfolio of Cannabis and CBD based businesses and is traded on the Nasdaq.

If you hear “Thematic Investing” these days it’s usually followed up by other terms like “innovation, disruption, next-gen, etc, etc”. Is that all Thematic investing is or is there more to the story? Media talks about it all day, some good talking points some bad; but why? Does this concept have a place in investment portfolios or is it just a buzzword of this point in time? I set out to answer just that and give my take on this trend and how I think the everyday person should view Thematic Investing. In the Thematic Investing Series to follow, I take a deeper dive into certain industries I like and think have potential to grow in the future. I wanted to go beyond the media headlines in the thematic investing world and learn what’s going on in these industries by actually talking with experts in that field, experts who are living and breathing in that industry every day.
